A SCRIMSHAW WHALEBONE, MAHOGANY, AND MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID DITTY BOX
American, first half 19th century
The oval mahogany lid inlaid with mother-of-pearl star and diamonds above a conforming box heavily engraved overall with various scenes including a large three-masted ship with American flag and a portrait of Commodore Perry(?) in uniform with a British man-o-war on fire in the background, with various other figures, biblical scenes and other decoration, minor breaks and losses on edge of lid
4½in. high, 8in. long, 6in. wide
