Lot Essay

The freedom of the penwork, combined with the regularity of the crosshatching, is close to drawings by Agostino from the last years of his career, such as two at Windsor Castle of Galatea and Saint Jerome illustrated in R. Wittkower, The Drawings of the Carracci in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle, London, 1952, nos. 103 and 105, pl. 40 and fig. 15.
