Lot Essay

Hildebrandt studied in Berlin, and travelled in Belgium, Italy and Russia. In 1826 he returned to Düsseldorf and taught at the Academy from 1832. Hildebrandt is today best known for his portraits, including those of his fellow painters. The present drawing was done while the artist was living in Rome. It depicts the corner of the apartement where he installed his studio. It was situated next to the 'Italian steps', probably the Spanish Steps on the Spanish Square, near the via Margutta, where most artists used to live from the 16th Century.
