James Pelham established himself as a miniaturist and portrait painter, before turning to small genre subjects later in life. His appointment to Princess Charlotte is testament to early success, and he travelled much, undertaking commissions of noble sitters in the environs of Bath and Cheltenham. His portrait of James Heaviside, Master of Ceremonies at Bath, is now in the Victoria Art Gallery, Bath. Pelham exhibited in London 1832-68. In 1846 he moved to Liverpool, exhibiting there and acting as secretary to the Liverpool Academy from 1854-5. He is sometimes confused with his son, fellow painter James Pelham III (1840-1906).
