Lot Essay

James Francis Danby was the second son and pupil of Francis Danby, A.R.A. (1793-1861). Danby was a regular contributor to the Royal Acdemy exhibtions and alone perhaps of all Francis Danby's many children remained in fairly close contact with his father. This composition with its dramatic subject and sunset shows the strong influence of the work of the artist's father.
