Lot Essay

Taken near where Lincoln Center now stands, this image originally appeared in Harper's Bazaar in April 1965, in an article about fashion and trends. At the time Lewis Alcindor attended Power Memorial High School, where he had earned three All-American selections and guided the team to a 95-6 record. The photograph is from an early edition of 8 prints created in 1963-1970, this one signed at a later date after Alcindor changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
