Lot Essay

The present model is an example of Bessie Potter Vonnoh's earliest sculpture which featured classical lines and minimal modeling. It can be dated circa 1898 or earlier, as she married the painter Robert Vonnoh the following year and started signing her sculptures Bessie Potter Vonnoh. Julia Marlow (1866-1950) was a well known actress during the turn of the century. She made her Metropolitan debut as Parthenia in Ingomar and firmly established her reputation in similar tragic and Shakespearian roles.
