Lot Essay

Pierre Jules Mêne is considered to be one of the most successful and prolific Animaliers of his day. Born in Paris in 1810, he was the son of a metal-turner who taught him the basics of the trade. In the centre of Parisian artisan life Mêne exhibited at the Salon from 1838 onwards. Here he launched his career with a group entitled 'Dog and Fox'. In the same year he also established his own foundry. In 1851 and 1862 he showed his work at the Great Exhibitions in London. Mêne died in Paris in 1879 (M. Forrest, Art Bronzes, Pennsylvania, 1988, p. 479).
