An extremely fine English Culpeper-type compound monocular microscope
Unsigned, but in the style of Matthew Loft. Circa 1720
The eyepiece lens is held in a brass and lignum vitae mount, with a sliding dust cover. This is threaded to attach to the top part of the draw-tube, with is also in lignum vitae, atop the green vellum-covered pasteboard tube, tooled with gilt. The field lens is retained within by a threaded iron ring (to replace the lignum vitae ring, which is retained with the Lot). The body-tube is made of pasteboard, covered with white fishskin, with a lignum vitae nose section for the mounting of the objectives, held atop three tall gilt-brass legs, incorporating the stage, rising from a stepped octagonal base incoporating a drawer and handle. Accessories include three objectives in stained ivory mounts, and three similar mounts lacking their objective beads, each numbered by a series of dots, together with a concave substage mirror arranged to mount in the top of the base, a frog plate, tweezers, stage forceps, and a stage attachement in the form of a disc with eight specimen cells, one cell filled with ivory and one with lignum vitae, and a central blued-iron pointer, all contained in the original pyramid-shaped mahogany carrying case with brass carrying handle, shaped escutcheon, and key
