The first 1902
A white horsehair sporran by A W Forsyth Ltd, Glasgow, with silver cantle (hallmarked Glasgow 1902) with thistle ornamentation, the face mounted with an oval plaque engraved with the Hamilton crest and motto above a shield bearing a hand and, below that, a monogram, and three long black hair tassels, each with ornate, domed 'bells', and ornate suspension-chain with black leather strap; a waistbelt, for dirk, of dark-blue leather ornamented with three rows of white metal studs and with two ornate silver chains (for suspending dirk), rectangular silver waist-plate (hallmarked Edinburgh 1886), engraved with monogram and armorial devices similar to those on the sporran; a shoulder-belt of blue leather matching the waisbelt (but not studded) with fittings hallmarked Edinburgh 1933; and a Highland gentleman's dress powder-horn, with fine ornate silver-plated mounts bearing armorial devices matching those on the other items

Lot Essay

The significance in this case of the hand on a shield is not entirely clear but it is possible that the armorial designs on these items relate to one of the several Hamilton families listed in Debrett
