A fashionable subject in the mid-19th century, and a whimsical example of one of Barye's more romanticised animal combinations, Cigogne posée sur une tortue proved instantly popular, both as an individual sculpture, and as an element for embellishing decorative table objects. First listed in Barye's 1845 catalogue (no. 6) and offered at a price of eight francs, no less than 143 casts of the model are recorded as being sold between 1850 and 1857. The modèle offered here was purchased at the 1876 atelier sale by Alfred Jacquemart and was subsequently edited with relative success by Barbedienne.
