Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck for confirming the tentative attribution; Dr. Beck notes that it is entirely characteristic of the artist's oeuvre, comparable with, for example, that sold, Christie's, London, 20 October 1999, lot 19 (£8,050).

Known primarily as a painter of beach scenes, Beelt was a native of Haarlem whose work was strongly influenced by that of Willem Kool. His beaches are generally populated with numerous figures and frequently depict either, and sometimes both, a fish-seller and a horse and rider, for example the picture in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe (inv. no. 1871).
