Lot Essay

The compositions follow a series of etchings, Les Misères et les malheurs de la guerre by Jacques Callot (1592-1635), of which a set is in the Art Museum, Princeton University, Princeton. The series was originally published in 1633 and is usually referred to in English as The Large Miseries of War. It reflects in detail some aspects of warfare during the time of the Thirty Years' War and is also a comment by the artist on the effect of war on society (see P. Paret, Imagined Battles: Reflections of War in European Art, 1997, pp. 31-2, illustrated).
