Lot Essay

This table is a fine example from a small group of distinctive tables that recent research has attributed to the shop of Brazilia Deming (1781-1854) and Erastus Bulkley (1798-1872) of New York. One such table was made by the firm for Stephen D. Miller (1787-1838), Governor of South Carolina, and the firm is known to have actively marketed furniture in the Charleston, Sotuh Carolina area (see Maurie McInnis and Robert Leath, "Beautiful Specimens, Elegant Patterns: New York Furniture for the Charleston Market, 1810-1840" in Beckerdite, American Furniture (Chipstone, 1996) p. 137-174, fig. 11). Another markedly similar table was sold in these rooms, January 18, 2002, lot 440.
