Gilman's interest in painting the nude seems to have been concentrated between the years 1911-13, however, the distinctive wallpaper seen behind the standing nude clearly identifies the interior as Gilman's lodgings and studio at 47 Maple Street, Fitzrovia, which he rented from Mrs Mounter between 1914 and 1917.
These rooms are the setting for a group of interiors from this period, such as Interior (Mrs Mounter), sold at Christie's, London, 11 March 1994, lot 59 (private collection); and Miss Ruth Doggett, sold at Christie's, 11 March 1994, lot 61 (private collection), as well as interiors in the collection of Tate Britain, the Walker Art Gallery, Leeds City Art Gallery, and the Ashmolean, Oxford.
