of brushed cotton (Fluffidown), standing on all-fours, printed features, pink velvet tongue and linen button eyes --16½in. (42cm.) long, late 1920s (some dirt and missing one pupil) and a Dean's brushed cotton Bessie the cow, printed with brown patches, clear and black glass eyes and bell --18in. (45.5cm.) long, circa 1929 (missing one eye)

Lot Essay

Ian Hassall is credited with creating this character for a children's magazine Toby. Desmond was dismal because his owner Miss Daisy Doodah had died, 'not that he minded very much, but he was left quite alone in the world'.
