The present watercolour would appear to be a preparatory drawing for the oil painting Crossing the Brook, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1850, which was sold to Joseph Gillott the Birmingham pen manufacturer for £315. It is now in the Bury Art Gallery and Museum.

Lot Essay

Rooks Hill is situated near Sevenoaks, Kent, not far from Shoreham, where Linnell worked along Samuel Palmer at this date. For another drawing by Linnell of Poll Hill, near Shoreham see Christie's, London, 11 June 2003, lot 5, fig. 1 (Private Collection).
