Lot Essay

The present watercolour is one of a number of studies for the painting of this subject. In two letters to Miss Sands written shortly after his arrival in Dieppe in 1914, Sickert referred to painting this subject, 'I have bought a note-book and done some studies already for the café-arcade picture'; and 'I shall probably come into Dieppe every Saturday. To study my arcade café picture (see W. Baron, Sickert, London, 1973, p. 364, no. 347).
