Lot Essay

The Calico Printworks at Broad Oak were founded in 1792. The works were principally associated with the Hargreaves family, who owned the factory from 1836 to 1880. After that time, the works came into the the ownership of F.W. Grafton of Manchester. The printworks were active until their closure in the middle of the 20th century.

Broad Oak House was built by John Hargreaves in 1802. The site took its name from an old oak tree in the grounds which reportedly had a 27 foot circumference. The original tree blew down in 1814 and a replacement was planted from one of its acorns.

Another view of Broad Oak Printworks by William Linton, signed and dated 1827 and bought at that date by William Hargreaves of Broad Oak, was exhibited at the Royal Manchester Institution in 1827 as no. 40. Both pictures share a similar view-point, however the latter version has a fisherman and stream in the foreground.
