Edo Period (Mid 18th-19th Century)
The first a monkey trapping an octopus under a hat, signed Tomokazu; the second a figure in a straw skirt wrestling with an octopus, the octopus's eyes inlaid in ivory and horn, the himotoshi formed by one of the tentacles, signed with incised and stained characters on a polished reserve on the base Masanao; the third stained ivory; an octopus and a rat in a friendly embrace, the eyes inlaid in horn, the octopus's suckers and other details well rendered, signed with incised and stained characters on a small plaque on the base Masatomo; the fourth stained ivory; a figure of Fukurokuju, with a kemari [kickball] attached to his elongated cranium, signed Anraku; the fifth a fukura-suzume with inlaid dark horn eyes, with signature Masanao, age cracks; the sixth a crouching hare with a nyoi sceptre in its mouth; the seventh a frog on a fungus, the eyes inlaid in dark horn; the eighth a snake, frog and snail in sansukumi stalemate
