Eight Wood Netsuke and one Ivory Netsuke
Edo Period (Late 18th-Mid 19th Century)
The first a yakko performing the hyottoko grimace; the second a monkey emerging from a chestnut, signed Nanbokusai; the third a seated figure with his fundoshi [loincloth] caught by a clam, signed Gyokusai; the fourth Raijin riding on a cloud; the fifth a ronin [vagrant samurai] struggling with a monkey on his back, boldly carved with heavy staining, the himotoshi formed by a large and a small hole on either side of the girdle; the sixth a figure holding a folded ceremonial umbrella; the seventh Shoki with a demon hiding on his hat, signed Masanao; the eighth two karako playing; the ninth a travelling priest with a biwa [lute] in a case on his back, with ivory details
