The First Signed Kajikawa, Edo Period (Early-Mid 19th Century)
The first oval with applied himotoshi, black-lacquer ground with medium-density gold kinpun, decoration in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with gold kirikane, compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame, signed on the base in gold hiramaki-e on a red-lacquer cartouche Kajikawa saku [made by Kajikawa] with a red-lacquer pot-seal Ei, translucent stone ojime, ivory manju netsuke decorated in gold hiramaki-e with a rice-plant and signed Naomitsu with a seal; the second two cases, rounded rectangular with applied himotoshi, black-lacquer ground, decoration in flat inlay of shell, interior gold fundame lacquer, translucent stone ojime, slight old damage, manju netsuke in the same materials as the inro

The first with a landscape incorporating the various stages of rice-cultivation, indirectly after Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724) or Kusumi Morikage (circa 1620-1690); the second with a crab, stream and grasses, the top and sides with fine geometric designs
