The sixty-two plate black-lacquered iron tenkokuzan suji kabuto engraved on the interior with the characters Munetada, with a five stage mixed metal tehen kanamono, the rim of the peak and fukigaeshi covered by a fukurin chiselled with scrolling foliage, the fukigaeshi with mon [family crests] of peony, the gilt-copper detachable kuwagata and kuwagata-dai the latter decorated with peonies and bonji on a nanako ground, the maedate finely formed as a dragon, signed Dewa no kuni ju Yokoya Tomotsune with a kao, the five-lame iron komanju-jikoro of kiritsuke-kozane, the black-lacquered iron menpo fitted with gilt teeth and hair moustache, beard and chin tuft, the sendan no ita and kyubi no ita similarly decorated with printed leather, gilt-copper rim and peony crests, o-sode, another set of chu-sode, yodarekake, nodowa, sendan no ita and kusazuri of leather hon-kozane, tsutsu-gote, the do of iron hon-kozane mounted with gilt-copper kanamono, with shoji no ita on watagami, the iron black-lacquer haidate of kawara, the iron black-lacquered suneate in sanmai-zutsu style, the entire armour black-lacquered and laced in kebiki style in blue, contained in two black-lacquered gusoku-bitsu with leather covers, the peony crests in gilt

Lot Essay

Yokoya Tomotsune was born in 1802 and studied with the Ishiguro and Yokoya schools. He usually made tsuba and fuchi-kashira. Later in his career he moved from Edo to Dewa.
