Lot Essay

With their male term supports, their hands held above their heads, and distinctive bulb acanthus feet, these tables are extremely closely related to the side table with arabesque frieze illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Mobile in Liguria, Genoa, 1996, p.308, fig.360.

In the ornament employed, these tables relate to period interiors such as the Alcove Room at the Palazzo Reale, Turin, which served as a State Bedroom to Carlo Emanuele II and still retains almost all of its original decoration. Planned as early as 1662 by Morello, the lavish architectural scheme was punctuated with carved giltwood supports surmounted by herms and furnished with extensive quantities of Oriental porcelain.
