The simulated bamboo decorated with red, gold and brown blossoming foliage, with rectangular tripartite back above a caned seat with squab-cushion and twelve smaller square cushions covered in green chintz, on bamboo cluster legs with pierced angle brackets and box stretchers

Lot Essay

The settee is designed in the Chinese fashion popularised by Sir William Chambers', Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture etc., London, 1757; while the railed pattern of its back corresponds to that of 'Bamboo' chairs supplied in 1767 for Shardeloes, Buckinghamshire by William Linnell of Berkeley Square. The same rail pattern features on some ebonised beechwood chairs exhibited at Donnington Priory, Newbury in 1983 ( R.Barton and C.Stewart-Lockhart, Loan Exhibition of Fine Furniture from Local Houses, 1983, no.26). The additional run of bamboo featured within the seat-rail and legs of this settee relates to that of a suite of Chinese bamboo furniture introduced by George III at Frogmore House, Windsor, and possibly acquired through Messrs Crace and Sons (W.H. Pyne's, Royal Residences, 1819). The frame of this settee is further embellished or japanned with golden flowers in the 'Chinese' manner.
