Lot Essay

The column of Phocas, at 56' in height, was the last monument to be erected in the Roman Forum. It was constructed of ancient fragments and was dedicated in 608 A.D. to the Byzantine emperor whose gilded statue stood on top. The figure on the model in this lot is conjectural.
