Provenance

The artist's studio stamp (L. 838a); Paris, 17-29 February 1864, probably part of lot 391 (209 francs as '126 feuilles de dessins et croquis divers ayant servis pour les lithographies de divers sujets').

Lot Essay

The verso of the present drawing is related to the lithographs of Le Duel de Faust et Valentin and La fuite de Faust et Mephisto après le Duel from a series of seventeen lithographs illustrating Goethe's Faust in the edition published in 1828 by Charles Mottes (A. Robaut, l'oeuvre complète d'Eugène Delacroix, Paris, 1885, nos. 230-251). According to Robaut the drawings were executed in 1827.
