Lot Essay

The verso of the present drawing is related to the lithographs of Le Duel de Faust et Valentin and La fuite de Faust et Mephisto après le Duel from a series of seventeen lithographs illustrating Goethe's Faust in the edition published in 1828 by Charles Mottes (A. Robaut, l'oeuvre complète d'Eugène Delacroix, Paris, 1885, nos. 230-251). According to Robaut the drawings were executed in 1827.
