An 18th-Century brass Augsburg-pattern compass sundial,
signed on the base J.N. Hölderi, with paper instructions in a leatherette-covered case --6.7cm. (2 5/8in.) wide

The chapter ring has a sprung gnomon and is graduated in hours III-XII, I-IX on the upper surface, with corresponding unlabelled graduations on the inner edge. The folding latitude arc is graduated 0-84°. The octagonal base has engraved geometric and floral decoration on the upper surface; the glazed compass box has a silvered dial engraved with a wind-rose, six compass points and the line of magnetic variation, with a blued-steel needle and brass pyramid cap. The underside of the compass box is engraved Eleva Poli Neumarck 49 Berlën 53 Gent Edenburg 57. The accompanying engraved paper instructions are entitled: Gebrauch dieses Compasses and signed Johann Norbert Hälderich Compassmacher in Augsburg, wohnhafft an der Bogelmaur. The reverse has a list of one hundred and sixty latitudes for continental cities and towns. The plush-lined leatherette-covered octagonal case has one brass hook and eye (hinged split).
