THE BEATLES SIGNED GUITAR
1964
A circa 1959 Hofner bass guitar with a violin-shaped body in a sunburst finish and a later-replaced mahogany neck originally signed in black ink by John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison plus Chet Atkins, Jim Reeves, Chubby Checker, Cliff Richard and Joe Frasier. (All signatures were later carved into the wood for permanence which is how they appear now.) Oscar Rexhauser of the group, The Hotjumpers, obtained all these autographs in person on June 6, 1964 at a concert hall in Blokker (north of Amsterdam) when his band opened for The Beatles while they were on their European tour that year. Unfortunately, Jimmy Nicol was Ringo's stand-in drummer that night, so Starr's signature does not appear on this piece. Also included is a reproduced program from that gig, a book titled 'The Beatles in The Netherlands' and notarized letters of authenticity from Rexhauser and others relating to the bass.
Length: 41 inches
Provenance
This piece was originally offered in the May 29, 1997 Christie's (South Kensington) auction titled "Pop and Guitars;" Sale 7604, Lot 383, Page 106 of that catalogue.
