Lot Essay

"I first saw Francis Alÿs' work when I went to the Guadalajara art fair in 1996. In nearly every home I saw stunning and modest surreal works that seemed to be resurrected memories. Always elusive and tucked away in corners and nooks, they suggested an alternate world creeping into ours. Soon after the fair I saw Alÿs' work in several places and the complexity of his practice-how it insinuates itself into the social context in which he finds himself-was revealed. I was enthralled and snapped up what I could find over the next several years."
