Lot Essay
This work was the centrepiece for Susan Norrie's installation known as Determined which was shown in the group show Heartland at Ivan Dougherty Gallery, Sydney and Wollongong City Gallery in 1985.
As Jo Holder explains: "Comprising thirty parts/fragments, the installation Determined was commissioned for an exhibition examining feminist visual practices.(Heartland, curator Frank McBride, Wollongong City Gallery and touring four venues).
The installation is hinged by two anamorphic works, a convex mirror and a wreath spiralling inward. Determined serves as an animate commodities index, notating value and recording both the desirability of commodities and their transient importance. . .......
In a surrealist sense the installation is also an autoportrait. In this discourse on memory and time the little objects have a half life as neither this nor that. Finally, there is time run out, where the coil of the wreath is determined to remember." This work is the Wreath. (J.
