Lot Essay

This form is alternatively called a 'continuous yoke-back armchair' for the visually pleasing wayan daiguo 'pipe-joints' that fluidly join the crestrail and armrests. Compare a pair of similar continuous yoke-back armchairs illustrated in Nicholas Grindley, exhibition Catalogue, London, November 2000, no. 11. See, also, a similar but more sinuous yoke-back armchair illustrated by G. Kates, Chinese Household Furniture, New York, 1962, fig. 82.
