Lot Essay

Most of the similar tables that have been published do not have 'giant's arm' braces, the present example is therefore unusual. Compare a similar huanghuali narrow table, the top not a plank but a hollow box, sold in these rooms, Important Chinese Furniture, Formerly the Museum of Chinese Classical Furniture Collection, 19 September 1996, lot 22. A comparable table from the Mr. and Mrs. Robert Piccus Collection of Fine Classical Chinese Furniture with the paneled top and without everted flanges, was sold in these rooms 18 September 1997, lot 41. See, also, a slightly larger table illustrated by R.D. Jacobsen, Classical Chinese Furniture in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, 1999, p. 120-121, no. 39. An example is illustrated in M.D. Flacks, Classical Chinese Furniture VI, Spring 2003, p. 18-21, no. 7. A huanghuali example with 'giant's arm' braces is illustrated by J. Ang in the catalogue of the exhibition, The Beauty of Huanghuali, Taipei, 1995, p.48, pl.17. For further discussion of this lot, see Curtis Evarts introductory essay, "Splendor of Chinese Classical Furniture: Highlights from the Gangolf Geis Collection", pp.8-10 of this catalogue.
