Of gilded iron, the grip, knuckle-guard, quillons and pommel set with old Mughal-cut diamonds and cabochon rubies and emeralds, the remains of the watered steel blade with an inlaid gold inscription on one side and on the spine, most of blade lacking

The inscription on the spine is written in fine nasta'liq and says allah muhammad/jahangir shahi 1036/saf shekan 22/t
God. Muhammad/Jahangir Shahi (belonging to the court of Jahangir), 1036 The breaker of the enemy's ranks, [regnal year] 22/(1628).
The inscription on the blade reads al-malik huwa allah sarkar 'abdullah wa 'abd al-rasul muhammad bahawal khan thalith .... 'abbasi The owner is He, The God. Commissioned by the servant of God and the servant of The Messenger, Muhammad Bahawal Khan. The third Bahadur of the 'Abbasi...

Muhammad Bahawal Khan was from the Afghan tribe of 'Abbasi Daudputras and founded the state of Bahawalpur in the Punjab during the disintegration of the Durrani empire. There is a mace in the British Museum (OA-10637) made for him inscribed sarkar-i muhammad bahawal khan-i 'abassi and dated 1182/1768-9 (R. Skelton et.al., The Indian Heritage, Court Life and Arts under Mughal Rule, London, 1982, cat.no.446).
