Engraved chart of Australia, South Western Pacific and South East Asia, on thick paper, [670 x 970mm.] annotated by Louis de Freycinet in pencil and red ink, with part of the missing South Australian coastline sketched in pencil, the course of the Swan River marked, the correct form of Cape Leuwin drawn in, and with historical annotations of earlier Dutch voyages along the north-west Australian coast, with red ruled grid enclosing Australia each grid square numbered in pencil 1-112. (centrefold and lower outer margin restored).
Provenance: Louis-Claude de Saulces de Freycinet and by descent to his great-great-grand nephew, Claude, Baron de Saulces de Freycinet.
This chart was probably used by Louis on board ship the Géographe during its return to France from Port Jackson November 1802 to July 1803. The chart is especially prepared for an engraver to copy, with the red ruled border corresponding exactly with the geographicals of the final official map issued by Freycinet. The actual coastline has of course been altered considerably using both D'Entrecasteaux and other English sources, but this must be considered to be one of the first working versions for the finished map, published in the Atlas (Partie Navigation et Géographie) [1811] of Péron's Voyage de découvertes aux Terres Australes..., Paris, 1812. For Freycinet's copy of this published map for the Baudin atlas, see Christie's, 26 September 2002 (The Freycinet Collection) lot 18 (illustrated opposite).
