One of the most romantic figures of 20th century Latin American history, Eva Peron rose to fame at the age of 26 when she married Colonel Juan Peron in 1945. She was thrust into the international limelight where she impressed the world with her combination of glamour and political acumen. Although this glittering stage came naturally to her, she never lost touch with her impoverished background and the people she left behind. She died at the age of 33, after which many in Argentina referred to her as "Saint Eva" and her image grew to almost mythical proportions.
The ruby necklace offered here was clearly a favorite piece of hers as it is seen in official portraits such as the Argentine postage stamps illustrated here. It is extraordinary to find antique ruby necklaces of this quality because of the rarity of the fine untreated Burmese stones and since so many jewels of the nineteenth century have been dismantled.
The aesthetic of this necklace is unusual as it has a delicacy that is not necessarily associated with the heavier designs of the Victorian era. The combination of provenance, beauty and rarity make the necklace a true jewel.

Set with a series of eleven graduated cushion-cut rubies, each within an old European-cut diamond surround, joined by similarly-set twin crescent and navette-shaped motifs, mounted in gold and silver, circa 1890, 15¾ ins.
With report CS 35658 dated 17 June 2002 from the American Gemological Laboratories stating that based on available gemological information, it is the opinon of the Laboratory that the origin of the ruby weighing approximately 1.26 carats would be classified as "Classic" Burma (Myanmar).
