Lot Essay

Op de achtergrond schilderde Jan Groenestein een rij overwegend 17de-eeuwse pakhuizen op het Prinseneiland. Deze panden, waaronder het pakhuis Mercurius zijn herkenbaar weergegeven. Dit pakhuis werd in 1949 door brand zwaar beschadigd. Aanvankelijk liet men het pand zwaar gehavend staan, later werd het half afgebroken en pas in de jaren '70 werd het huis gerestaureerd.
