Lot Essay

The dominant building in the present lot is the meat market in Antwerp, built in 1501 in the Brabant gothic style by the architect Herman de Wagemakere de Oude. It was commissioned by the Butchers Guild and meats were first sold there in 1503. The building currently houses the Antwerp Museum for Applied Arts.
