ANTICHRIST and THE FIFTEEN SIGNS, in Latin, French and Italian: Vita antichristi, Aureum opus. [?Lyons: ?Guy Morin, for ?Etienne Gueynard, c.1520].
4° (237 x 168mm). Collation: A-F4. 16 leaves. Woodcut historiated 4-part border on title, 22 full-page woodcuts from 20 blocks, woodcut initials. Title printed in red and black, gothic and bâtarde types. (Hinges discreetly strengthened, outer frame of a few woodcuts just shaved.) Modern vellum wrapper, pastepaper folding case (a little worn). Provenance: [sold Karl & Faber, Munich, auction 47, 1954, lot 13 -- William Schab, New York, cat. 22, 1956, no. 2 -- Sandberg, Stockholm (sold to:)] -- Dr. Otto-Schäfer-Stiftung, e.V. (OS monogram stamp).
APPARENTLY UNIQUE COPY of a trilingual edition of the Vita Antichristi and The Fifteen Signs. Unsigned, it is printed with types used in the first two decades of the 16th century by several Lyons printers, including Guy Morin for Etienne Gueynard. Gueynard was also in possession of the title border. Eleven of the striking woodcuts had first appeared in the first French edition, printed by Ortuin at Lyons in about 1 (GW 2053). They illustrate subsequent Lyons editions (with further woodcuts added to the series) and were copied for Paris and Italian editions. Owing to the popularity of the text, all editions are very rare and many, like the present, are known in one copy only.
