A GREEN-PAINTED, POLYCHROME-DECORATED AND PARCEL-GILT SERPENTINE COMMODE
The carcase French 18th Century, altered and decorated in the late 19th early 20th Century
Decorated overall with foliate borders, the top with Cupid being pulled in his chariot by three ladies, above one shallow and two deep drawers, the latter painted sans traverse with Cupid Binding Aglaia to a Laurel Tree and Cupid disarmed by Euphrosine, the sides each with a landscape roundel, on paw feet
35 in. (89 cm.) high; 51 in. (130 cm.) wide; 24½ in. (62.5 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The two scenes on the front of the commode are inspired by Anglica Kauffman's paintings Cupid Binding Aglaia to a Laurel Tree and Cupid disarmed by Euphrosine, engraved by Thomas Burke in 1784 (C. Helbok, Angelika Kauffmann und ihre Zeit, Dusseldorf, 1979, fig. 128).
