Lot Essay

A watercolour of Lord Dysart treating his tenantry at Ham House, 11½ x 18¾ in., is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Wilbraham, 6th Earl of Dysart (1739-1821) succeeded his reclusive and childless brother Lionel, 5th Earl in 1799. Lionel allowed no visitors to the house replying to George III's request 'Whenever my house becomes a public spectacle, His Majesty shall certainly have the first view'. His brother appears to have been more approachable.
