Lot Essay
Born in California in 1890, Menasco had a career as an artist in other fields before he devoted himself to equestrian painting. In 1948 he left a successful career with a large New York advertising agency and moved to Kentucky, where he remained for the rest of his life. Among his early clients were John Hay Whitney, Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane and Mrs. Richard DuPont. His work is characterized by a sound understanding of anatomy and he was an accomplished horseman with a good eye. He painted horses with a feeling for their natural stance and attitude and nearly always included backgrounds of the track or stud farm as in the present work.
