A St. Cloud silver-mounted snuff-box
Circa 1740, the mounts contemporary
Modelled as a fantastic beast, its ribbed shell enriched with gilt dot ornament and moulded with a line of flowerheads, its body moulded with a flower-spray above each foot and above its head, its head with large ears and a moulded flowerhead on its forehead, its eyes and nose enriched with black enamel and its mouth with a red line, the cover moulded with three flower-sprays against a ground of gilt dot ornament, the interior of the cover gilt with a flower-spray surrounded by a similar ground (minute area of wear to gilding at edge of shell by head)
