Lot Essay

The design for these X-shaped tabourets is included in Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine's Recuil de Décorations Intérieures, which was published in 1801. The design includes two views of the tabouret, from the front and the side and illustrates the precious passementerie with bejewelled tassles and fringes. The description specifies that the tabourets were executed in Paris and were destined for the château de St. Cloud (L. de Groër, Les arts décoratifs de 1790 à 1850, Freibourg, 1985, p. 151, fig. 286.)
