FILLMORE, Millard (1800-1874), President. Autograph letter signed ("Millard Fillmore") to his brother Charles Fillmore, Buffalo, 3 April 1853. 1 page, 8vo.
Just one month after leaving the White House, former president Millard Fillmore lost his wife, Abigail. He reports the tragic news to his brother: "My Dear wife is no more. She died in Washington on Wednesday the 30th ult. and we left with her remains the next day for this place, and arrived here the night before last and she was buried yesterday. Her disease was inflammation of the lungs arising from a severe cold, taken about the 8th of March, which soon terminated in a dropsy of the lungs. She bore all her sufferings with uncomplaining fortitude and at last expired without a struggle or a groan. The rest of my family are here, and [are] as well as could be expected but are all saddened with grief." Mrs. Fillmore had fallen ill after sitting through the chilly Inauguration ceremony of her husband's successor, Franklin K. Pierce.
