12mo, 96pp., 2 photographs, many stock illustrations. Original light blue paper wrappers printed in red, title on front cover with device, rear cover advertising "Tom Anderson's New Cabaret," (slight wear at base of spine).
Presumed 12th printing of the notorious New Orleans "Blue Book," a guide to that city's legendary tenderloin district and its attractions, including extensive advertisements for libations like Veuve Cliquot Champagne, Raleigh Rye, George A. Dickel's Tennessee Whiskey; C.D. Walton ("King of Piano Tuners"); tobacco products including Jose Vila Cigars ("backed by Uncle Sam"), El Ferdie cigars ("joy in every puff"), and sundry drugstores, attorneys and other concerns. But the principal contents are a detailed listing, with telephone numbers, of "sporting houses" and independant prostitutes. Page [1] brags that "anyone who knows to-day from yesterday will say that the Blue Book is the right book for the right people," and "has proven its authority as to what is doing in the 'queer zone.'" At Grace Lloyd's "an array of beautiful women," are featured, while May Spencer's "has never less than fifteen beautiful ladies--from all parts of this great and glorious country." "The famous Mademoiselle Rita Walker," depicted in a voluptuous pose, is touted as "one of the first women in America to dance in bare feet." An advertisement for Tom Anderson's Annex Cafe, brags of "all the latest musical selections...rendered by a typical southern darky orchestra," reminding us that before it was closed by the U.S. Navy in 1919, Storyville served as the birthplace of American jazz.
