Lot Essay

In response to the success of the arts and crafts movement, Tiffany began to produce silver marked "SPECIAL HAND WORK" which featured objects of heavy gauge with hammered surfaces. The date of the line's introduction is uncertain; the earliest piece appears to date to 1914, and the number of items produced was very limited. (See Wendy Kaplan: The Art That is Life, p 284.) See lot 85 for another example of Tiffany's "SPECIAL HAND WORK."
