We are grateful to Mr. Jerry Losty of the India Office Library, London for providing the following information:
'Middleton was in the Bengal Civil Service of the East India Company from 1780 until his death in 1810. He passed his career in Bengal. After minor posts in Dacca and Calcutta, from 1798 he was Commerical Resident at Commercolly (Kumarkhali), in the Rajshahi district of what is now Bangladesh, where the Company maintained a factory for the collection of piecegoods. In 1801 he became Salt Agent to the Twentyfour Parganahs district, so he would have removed back to Calcutta where he remained until his death.
Robert Home's sitter book records painting a full length portrait of Mr Middleton at Commercully in August 1799 (on his way back to Calcutta from Dacca), for which he charged 2000 rupees. No doubt he began it in Commercully and finished it in Calcutta, hence the date'.
