A scale model of Joshu Slocum's yacht Spray

A fine scle model in 1/2" scale, built up in plank on frame construction using boxwood planking. The planks are held in place with blackend brass pins and some of the planking has been left off either side of the hull to show the construction details. The deck of the model is also planked and pinned and is fitted with numerous details which include: anchors (modeled in brass), anchor rode, anchor windlass, water casks, bilge pump, cabin tops and companionways, ships wheel, cleats and many other details. The model is rigged as a gaff rigged yawl with standing and running rigging, masts, booms, gaffs, bow sprit, turning blocks and many other details. The model is displayed in a glass case with a mahogany base.

Lot Essay

Spray was originally built ca.1800, with an LOA of 36.8ft, a beam of 14.2ft, and a draft of 4.2ft. Joshua Slocum re-built the Spray and departed on his round the world journey from Boston on 24 April 1895. He encountered numerous adventures, including pirates, and a gale while going around Cape Horn. He arrived at Newport, RI on 27 June 1898 after a voyage of 3 years, 2 months and 2 days covering 46,000 miles.
