Lot Essay

Gregory Kane, c.1829-1865, is recorded in the 1847 Almanac as a trunk and portmanteau maker trading at 69 Dame Street. On his trade card Kane billed himself as' Portmanteau and Dressing Case Manufacturer to His Excellency The Lord Lieutenant and the officers of the Garrison. Camp Furniture, Military and Naval Chests, Canteens, Imperials, Carriage Trunks, Tarpaulins, Hair-Mattresses, Bed Valises, Carpet Bags, &c, &c. Inventor of the Lady's Portmanteau and Gentleman's Improved Triple Portmanteau'. Kane won prizes in the Exhibition of Manufacturers in 1841, 1844 and 1847.
